A 6-year-old Illinois girl has died after being struck by a school bus near her family’s home in Frankfort.
The heartbreaking crash happened at around 3:24 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to the Frankfort Police Department.
Officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a crash involving a school bus and a “juvenile pedestrian.”
The child was taken to a hospital with serious injuries but later died.
She was identified as 6-year-old Jenna Menias, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Jenna was reportedly walking near her family home when she was struck.
Witnesses and first responders immediately began CPR and other life-saving measures at the scene before the little girl was transported to the hospital.
Police described the incident as a devastating tragedy for the entire community.
“This tragic incident has had a profound impact on those involved, their families, and our community,” the department said.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their family, loved ones, and all those impacted as they navigate this difficult time.”
Police also asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy while they grieve.
“We kindly ask the community and media to respect the privacy of those involved and their families, allowing them the time and compassion they need during this period of grief,” the department added.
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 confirmed that the school bus involved belonged to the district and was transporting students from Frankfort School District 157-C at the time of the crash.
District officials said they were fully cooperating with the police investigation.
Jenna was a student in Frankfort School District 157-C.
The district said the tragedy had deeply affected the school community and encouraged students struggling with what happened to speak with a trusted adult, teacher, social worker or member of the school support team.
Several students were reportedly riding on the bus when Jenna was struck.
Those students were evaluated at the scene by emergency responders before being reunited with their families.
Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle also addressed the tragedy, calling the situation “heartbreaking” and asking the community to pray for Jenna’s family, the witnesses and the first responders who rushed to help.
Authorities have not released additional details about exactly how the crash happened, and the investigation remains ongoing.
