Two 25-year-old runners died after collapsing during one of the world’s largest half marathons in England.
The two men, both from northeast England, became seriously ill while taking part in Sunday’s Great North Run, a 13.1-mile race stretching from Newcastle to South Shields.
Medical teams rushed to help both runners, but organizers said they later died despite emergency treatment.
The exact causes of death have not yet been determined.
The Great Run Company, which organizes the event, confirmed the deaths in a statement.
“It is with deep sadness, The Great Run Company can confirm the death of two participants at yesterday’s Great North Run,” organizers said.
“The two runners, both 25-year-old males from the North East, collapsed at the event, and despite the very best efforts of our medical teams later passed away.”
Officials said the cause of death in each case will be determined in due course.
Organizers said they would not release additional details out of respect for the men and their families.
“Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the two participants,” the company said.
“We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them.”
About 63,000 runners participated in this year’s event, marking the 45th running of the Great North Run.
The race is considered the largest half marathon in the world and draws tens of thousands of participants each year.
Andy Burnham also took part in the race, becoming the first sitting British prime minister to compete in the event.
The deaths have cast a shadow over what is normally one of Britain’s biggest annual running celebrations, as investigators now work to determine what caused the two young men to suddenly collapse.
