A terrifying hostage crisis at a Brazilian preschool ended with police fatally shooting an armed intruder who threatened to set a classroom on fire while holding 13 young children captive.
The frightening ordeal unfolded Friday, October 9, at the São Braz Municipal Early Childhood Education Center in Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil, where children as young as 4 were trapped inside a classroom with a man carrying a knife, a replica handgun and flammable liquid.
According to authorities, the suspect climbed over a school wall before entering the building and taking 13 children, ages 4 and 5, hostage.
Once inside, the man allegedly spread flammable liquid across the classroom floor and threatened to ignite it, creating a potentially deadly situation for the frightened children.
Police quickly surrounded the building, evacuating other students while specialized officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect.
The standoff lasted approximately three hours as desperate parents gathered outside, anxiously waiting for news about their children.
Paraná state police spokesperson Leticia Martins said negotiators tried to convince the man to surrender peacefully, but the situation became increasingly dangerous.
The suspect reportedly held a lighter while threatening to set himself and the room on fire.
Authorities initially believed he was carrying a firearm, but investigators later determined the weapon was a replica. He also possessed a real knife.
As negotiations continued, the children became increasingly frightened. Police commander Alexandre Lopes Dias said several were crying, while others were so terrified they lost control of their bladders.
The situation escalated when the man allegedly began physically assaulting some of the children.
Officers ultimately determined they could no longer safely wait.
Members of Brazil’s elite Special Police Operations Battalion, known as BOPE, entered the classroom in a carefully coordinated tactical operation.
According to police, the suspect attempted to grab one of the children as officers moved in. He was shot and killed during the intervention.
Moments later, emergency responders began carrying the children out of the building, bringing an end to the frightening ordeal.
All 13 children survived.
Five were taken to a medical facility for evaluation, including one child who suffered visible facial injuries during the suspect’s alleged assault. Authorities said none of the children sustained life-threatening injuries.
Videos recorded outside the school showed emotional parents rushing toward their children as officers escorted the youngsters to safety.
Curitiba Mayor Eduardo Pimentel celebrated the rescue, describing it as the news every parent had desperately hoped to hear.
“The 13 children are alive and safe!” he announced after the operation, thanking emergency personnel for their actions.
The mayor also promised psychological support for the children, their families and school employees.
Police later reported that the suspect had a history of schizophrenia, although authorities have not established whether any mental health condition contributed to the attack.
His identity was not immediately made public, and investigators have yet to determine why he targeted the preschool.
The incident has renewed concerns about security at Brazilian schools, particularly following several previous attacks involving young students.
In April 2023, four children were killed in an attack at a daycare center in Blumenau, another city in southern Brazil.
Following Friday’s hostage crisis, Curitiba officials announced plans to increase municipal police patrols around the affected preschool and examine additional security measures at schools throughout the city.
For the families involved, the outcome brought enormous relief after hours of uncertainty.
