Three people were injured when gunfire erupted outside a Georgia high school during homecoming festivities, with authorities accusing a woman of pulling out a gun and opening fire following an argument that turned physical.
The shooting happened Saturday, October 17, around 6:05 p.m. in the tailgating area of Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the violence began when Aiyana Lane became involved in an altercation with another woman outside the school.
Investigators say the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation before several bystanders stepped in to separate the women.
But the situation allegedly took a dangerous turn moments later.
Authorities say Lane pulled out a firearm and fired at least one shot toward the woman involved in the original dispute.
Three people were struck by gunfire, sending deputies and emergency medical personnel rushing to the scene.
All three victims were transported to local hospitals. Fortunately, authorities reported that their injuries were not life-threatening.
Their names and ages have not been publicly released.
Deputies responding to the shooting took Lane into custody at the scene and recovered a firearm believed to have been involved in the incident.
She was subsequently charged with three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, third-degree cruelty to children and carrying a weapon within a school safety zone.
The child cruelty charge raises additional questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, although investigators have not publicly explained what led to that particular allegation.
The incident occurred during a weekend of homecoming celebrations at Laney High School, where students, families and community members had gathered for football-related activities.
The school’s homecoming game against T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School was part of the festivities.
Despite the frightening incident, school officials emphasized that no students were involved in the shooting.
The Richmond County School System confirmed that all student-athletes, cheerleaders, marching band members and other students participating in homecoming activities were safe and accounted for.
District officials said the confrontation involved adults.
In a separate development, a school district police officer suffered an injury while responding to another altercation during the incident. The officer was reportedly recovering well.
The school system expressed concern for the shooting victims and their families while thanking law enforcement for responding.
Officials also emphasized that violence has no place on school campuses and said the district would continue cooperating with investigators.
The location of the shooting has added to concerns because it occurred on school property during an event traditionally intended to bring students, alumni and families together.
Under Georgia law, carrying a firearm within a designated school safety zone is generally prohibited unless a specific legal exception applies. The precise circumstances of Lane’s weapons charge will be addressed through the criminal justice process.
Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and examine evidence to determine what sparked the confrontation and whether additional charges are warranted.
Authorities have not disclosed whether any of the three people injured were directly involved in the original fight or were innocent bystanders.
Lane’s case remains under investigation, and the charges against her have not been proven in court.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the shooting, including possible cellphone footage, to contact investigators at 706-821-1080.
