At least 22 people were killed and 24 others injured when a bus carrying mourners home from a pastor’s funeral collided with a truck on a busy highway in Kenya, turning an already emotional journey into a devastating tragedy.
The deadly crash happened around 7 a.m. Sunday, October 25, near the town of Mtito Andei, approximately 140 miles southeast of Nairobi, the country’s capital.
The passengers were traveling to the coastal city of Mombasa after attending their church pastor’s funeral in western Kenya. Many had been together for hours before stopping for breakfast in Mtito Andei.
Shortly after they resumed their journey, disaster struck.
According to local authorities, the bus collided with a large truck along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, one of Kenya’s busiest transportation routes.
The impact caused extensive damage to the bus, leaving passengers trapped and prompting a frantic rescue operation.
Emergency responders and passing motorists rushed to help the victims, while ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
Officials initially reported 20 deaths, but the toll climbed to 22 after additional victims died from their injuries.
At least 24 people were reported injured, according to the Associated Press, with many receiving treatment at Mtito Andei Hospital.
For those who survived, the frightening experience has left painful memories and unanswered questions.
Violet Mwandonyi, a mother of two who was traveling on the bus, said she could barely remember the moments leading up to the collision.
She recalled the passengers crying out for help as people rushed toward the wreckage.
But her greatest concern was the fate of her two children, who had been traveling with her.
“I don’t know the fate of my two children who were on the bus,” she told reporters.
Another survivor, Spenza Mudave, said she believed the truck struck the bus from behind, causing it to overturn.
However, investigators have received conflicting accounts about exactly how the collision occurred.
Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority said preliminary evidence pointed toward a head-on collision that may have involved an unsafe attempt to pass other vehicles.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif also indicated that investigators were examining whether the bus driver attempted to overtake several vehicles before the collision.
Authorities have not released a final determination, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
The crash has shaken families and church communities across Kenya, particularly because the passengers were returning from a funeral.
The group had gathered to honor their late pastor and was making the long trip home when the collision occurred.
Now, multiple families are mourning additional loved ones, while survivors struggle with serious injuries and the emotional aftermath.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. expressed condolences to the victims’ families and confirmed that emergency medical teams were treating survivors.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about safety along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
Just three weeks earlier, another deadly accident on the same major route claimed 17 lives.
That collision occurred near Salama, also in Makueni County, and involved passengers returning from a religious gathering.
The two tragedies have left at least 39 people dead in less than a month along one of Kenya’s most important highways.
The route connects Nairobi with Mombasa, the country’s main port city, and carries a steady flow of buses, trucks and private vehicles.
Long-distance traffic, dangerous passing maneuvers and difficult road conditions have repeatedly raised concerns about serious accidents.
Following Sunday’s collision, officials urged drivers to obey speed limits, avoid risky overtaking and exercise greater caution, particularly when traveling long distances.
Investigators are continuing to examine the crash scene and gather statements from survivors to determine exactly what happened.
The identities of all those killed have not yet been publicly released, and authorities are working to notify their families.
For the survivors, the focus remains on medical treatment and locating loved ones who were aboard the bus.
What began as a journey home after saying goodbye to a respected pastor has left an entire community facing another heartbreaking loss.
As investigators search for answers, families across Kenya are mourning the victims of a crash that has once again raised urgent questions about safety on the country’s highways.
