A 21-year-old man with a fixation on Jeffrey Dahmer was sentenced to 45 years in prison for plotting to kidnap, kill, and dismember gay men before consuming their remains.
Chance Seneca received his punishment in a courtroom in Lafayette, Louisiana, more than two years after his arrest. He had previously entered a guilty plea in September 2022.
In June 2020, Seneca arranged a meeting with Harold White, a 18-year-old gay man whom he had met on Grindr, a dating app for the LGBTQ community.
Seneca lured White with the promise of a date, but instead drove him to his father’s house and pulled out a gun, forcing White to put on handcuffs. Seneca then attempted to murder White using various methods, according to a press release from the Justice Department on Wednesday.
During his vicious attack, Seneca slit White’s wrists nearly to the bone, severing the tendons. Even after extensive treatment in the hospital, White never regained feeling in his left hand.
Before he could complete the murder, Seneca lost his nerve and called police on himself.
“The facts of this case are truly shocking, and the defendant’s decision to specifically target gay men is a disturbing reminder of the unique prejudices and dangers facing the LGBTQ+ community today,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke.
At Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors argued for a hefty sentence. They cited Seneca’s obsession with Dahmer, the infamous serial killer who targeted gay men and dismembered them, the Acadiana Advocate reported.
According to investigators, Seneca expressed in a notebook that he would like to be Dahmer if given the choice to be any historical figure. He also named his pet rabbit after the serial killer and reportedly entertained the idea of getting a tattoo of Dahmer’s face, as stated by prosecutors.
