Yesterday, Kamala Harris gave a speech to reporters from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) about the impact of climate change on minority communities. When she entered the room, her assistant asked everyone to stand up as a sign of respect.

Her assistant also encouraged the reporters to applaud Harris as she made her entrance. The reporters were initially silent, but the assistant reminded them that it was appropriate to clap for the Vice President. You can see a video clip of the moment below.

Many people have expressed discomfort with the behavior of Kamala Harris in a recent video clip. She appeared to be acting as if she were royalty, prompting comparisons to a similar moment during Jeb Bush’s 2016 Presidential campaign.

After delivering a lengthy speech, Jeb asked the quiet audience to “please clap” for him.

It is unfortunate that politicians sometimes exhibit such arrogance, as it does little to inspire respect or admiration.

In the Harris clip, despite her assistant urging the crowd to clap, they remain silent or even laugh at the request.

It is troubling to think that our elected officials may not be garnering the respect they need from their own people or from world leaders.

Perhaps this is because they have not earned the respect of those around them. It is important for our leaders to remember that they are here to serve the people, not to act as if they are above them.

Only through humility and hard work can they truly earn the respect and trust of their constituents.
