Real Life Tarzan “Didn’t Know Women Existed”

A fascinating story of isolation and self-sufficiency took place in a remote area of the Vietnamese province of Quang Ngai. Ho Van Lang was a man who had lived all his life in the depths of the bush and had never known a woman. His remarkable odyssey began in 1972 when, as a young child, he and his father and brother escaped civilization following a traumatic episode during the Vietnam War. His mother and two siblings were killed by a US bomb, which caused them to flee into the forest.

Lang and his family lived in isolation for 43 years, secluded in the middle of the jungle. They had no other means of support but their ingenuity and the gifts of nature. They lived off of honey, fruit, and woodland critters, and created their own tools and shelters to secure their survival in the wild. They mastered avoiding contact with people, always running away when they spotted someone nearby.

The family’s secret existence was discovered in 2015 when photographer Alvaro Cerezo located them. Cerezo traveled with Lang, Tri, his father, and the three of them as they made a temporary home in a small Vietnamese village. But in an unexpected turn of events, the family ultimately opted to take Cerezo back to their jungle home.

It was at this point that Lang’s ignorance of women became apparent. Lang admitted that his father had never described what a female was to him when he was questioned if he knew what a female was. Although he had observed ladies in the village, he had never realized the fundamental distinction between men and women. Cerezo writes, “More surprising still is that today, despite being able to distinguish between men and women, he still doesn’t know the essential difference between them.”

Lang’s lack of understanding went beyond only gender. Lang was a “baby in a man’s body,” as his brother put it, and had trouble understanding simple social norms. He was deprived of the knowledge and understanding that most people acquire via social interaction because he had lived his entire life in the bush. He was incapable of distinguishing between right and wrong and lacked the emotional and mental development necessary for adulthood.

Lang has persevered and adapted despite these difficulties. He is settling into country life gradually and enjoying the various interactions and experiences it brings. After spending time with Lang, Cerezo professed his appreciation for him, calling him the most likable person he had ever encountered.

We are enthralled by Lang’s story not just because of the incredible events that occurred in his life, but also because it provides an original viewpoint on what it means to be human. It serves as a reminder of the significant impact socialization and cultural norms have on how we perceive the world. Due to Lang’s social exclusion, he lacks a number of experiences and knowledge that the majority of us take for granted.

Lang is a living example of the human spirit’s resiliency and ability for change as he continues his adaptation journey. His tale emphasizes the value of relationships, education, and the influence of society on how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.
