According to her lawyer, Leslie Van Houten, a former associate of Charles Manson’s cult, will be granted parole in the upcoming weeks. Van Houten, who is now 73 years old, has been incarcerated for her part in two stabbing deaths that Manson engineered during a heinous spree in 1969. After California Governor Gavin Newsom opted not to contest Van Houten’s parole, the decision to release her was made.
Attorney Nancy Tetreault confirmed the information and emphasized that her client, Van Houten, will be freed on parole and that she has actively worked on her rehabilitation and does not present a risk to the public’s safety. Tetreault conveyed Van Houten’s joy and thanks for the parole board and court’s acknowledging her efforts.
Despite the fact that Governor Newsom had already overturned Van Houten’s parole decisions three times since taking office, a spokesman for the governor indicated that future appeals would be unlikely to be successful and that Newsom will therefore not take any steps to prevent Van Houten’s release. The governor is upset by the Court of Appeal’s ruling, the spokeswoman admitted, but the Manson Family murders continue to have a significant impact on all Californians and the families of the victims.
In 1969, the Los Angeles area was the scene of a string of startling and horrifying murders committed by the Manson cult, which sent shockwaves through southern California. Actress and model Sharon Tate, who was wed to filmmaker Roman Polanski, was one of their victims.
In accordance with Manson’s directives, Van Houten was found guilty of taking part in the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Her initial death sentence was reversed, resulting in several trials that came to a standstill. She received a final punishment of seven years to life in jail.
Van Houten’s release was previously halted in court, despite the Board of Parole Hearings deeming her eligible for parole three times—in 2016, 2017, and 2019. A psychological assessment included with her parole application underlined her excellent prison record for discipline but also emphasized the possible stress she would experience upon release owing to her popularity.
Using her bachelor’s and master’s degrees she obtained while incarcerated, Van Houten allegedly plans to continue working as a tutor after being freed. As the Manson Family killings remain ingrained in the collective consciousness of Californians and the families of the victims continue to struggle with the consequences of the crimes, Van Houten’s impending parole prompts concerns and evokes strong feelings.
