Gabby Petito’s Parents Reach Settlement with Brian Laundrie’s Parents

After months of legal battles and emotional turmoil, a settlement has been reached in the emotional distress case between the families of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, as reported by NBC News. Gabby Petito’s parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, announced the resolution in a statement released by their attorney on Wednesday night, revealing that the agreement was reached following a lengthy mediation session.

Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old from Blue Point, New York, tragically lost her life during a cross-country road trip with Brian Laundrie in 2021. Throughout their journey, Petito documented their travels online, capturing the attention of many. However, her disappearance in August of that year sparked widespread concern and suspicion, particularly towards Laundrie after he returned to Florida alone in their van.

After an extensive search, Gabby Petito’s body was discovered in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming on September 19. Brian Laundrie was later found dead in a swampy area of Florida on October 20, having died by suicide. Prior to his death, Laundrie confessed to being responsible for Petito’s death in a note discovered by authorities.

The aftermath of this tragic event led to legal actions taken by Gabby Petito’s family against Brian Laundrie’s parents and their attorney, Steven Bertolino. The Petito family accused Laundrie’s parents and Bertolino of intentional and reckless infliction of emotional distress, alleging that they knowingly lied to them and the public about Gabby’s fate.

Steven Bertolino, the attorney representing Laundrie’s parents, confirmed the settlement but did not disclose any details regarding its terms. He expressed a desire to move forward from this matter and put it behind them.

Previously, a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Petito family against Brian Laundrie’s parents had been settled, with a judge awarding the Petito family $3 million in damages in 2022.
