In a scene straight out of a dystopian nightmare, a Colorado grandmother in her 70s, known as the “J6 Praying Grandma,” has been hit with a staggering six-figure fine and sentenced to a year of probation. Her crime? Praying at the Capitol grounds on January 6, 2021.

Rebecca Lavrenz, who also goes by the moniker “J6 Praying Grandma” on social media, was convicted on four misdemeanor charges earlier this year. These charges include entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building, disorderly conduct in the Capitol, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in the Capitol.

For her so-called “crimes,” Lavrenz was handed a sentence that would make any reasonable person question the state of justice in America today. Avoiding jail time by a hair’s breadth, she was slapped with 12 months of probation, six months of home detention with internet restrictions, and over $103,000 in fines, restitution, and special assessments. Yes, you read that right—over $103,000 for a great-grandmother whose most egregious act was praying.

Lavrenz, speaking to Newsmax, described her “offense” with a mix of disbelief and defiance. “I went through a door that opened in front of me, and I walked through the Capitol. I carried God’s presence into that building for about 10 minutes, walked out, did not shout, stayed within the lines, and was not stopped by any police officers and walked back out,” she recounted. This is what the Department of Justice deemed worthy of such a severe penalty.

Arrested just days before Christmas in December 2022, Lavrenz became another name on the ever-growing list of Americans targeted by a Justice Department hell-bent on making examples of those who dared to stand up for their beliefs on January 6. Prosecutors had originally pushed for a 10-month prison sentence, a demand that speaks volumes about the political motivations driving these prosecutions.

In a video she posted online before her conviction, Lavrenz captured the surreal and unsettling reality of her situation. “My own country is treating me like a criminal just because I believe that … they stole my rightful president,” she said. “And just standing up for my country makes me a criminal, and it’s not right; it feels so weird to be here.”

The hammer of justice hasn’t just fallen on Lavrenz. She is one of hundreds who have been aggressively pursued by the Department of Justice, which seems more interested in crushing dissent than upholding the rule of law. The Supreme Court’s ruling this summer in Fischer v. United States, which struck down the misuse of the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act to prosecute individuals like Lavrenz, should have been a wake-up call. But for Lavrenz, and so many others, that call came too late.

And let’s not forget the broader implications of these actions. The same legal overreach that ensnared Lavrenz was also wielded against former President Donald Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith. But the Supreme Court stepped in again, affirming the president’s legal immunity for official acts, delaying Trump’s criminal trial related to the January 6 events until after the election. The message is clear: the legal system is being weaponized to target those who challenge the prevailing political narrative.

Rebecca Lavrenz’s case is a chilling reminder of the state of our nation—a nation where a grandmother can be fined over $100,000 and placed under house arrest for the simple act of prayer. It’s a story that should send shivers down the spine of every American who values freedom and justice.
