We’re diving into a topic that affects every single one of you—whether you realize it or not. While Washington fiddles, Rome is burning, and the flames are being fueled by the uncontrolled migrant crisis that’s costing American taxpayers an unimaginable sum: $150 billion in a single year.
Yes, you heard that right. According to a study from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), last year alone, U.S. taxpayers forked over a staggering $150 billion to support the estimated 20 million illegal migrants in this country. And if you’re thinking that the federal government is shouldering the burden, think again. The brunt of this cost is being dumped on state and local governments—on the backs of hardworking Americans like you.
Let’s break it down. Between 2017 and 2023, the true cost of this migrant crisis to American taxpayers shot up by an eye-watering $35 billion. Where’s all that money going? We’re talking about a vast array of services: education, healthcare, law enforcement, legal aid, welfare—you name it, they’re using it, and you’re paying for it.
Take Massachusetts, for example. Republican leaders there are sounding the alarm on a massive $1 billion black hole in the state’s budget. And they’re pointing fingers at the Democrat-controlled government, accusing them of secretly diverting funds to handle the migrant crisis. The state’s Republican Party is now demanding answers, filing a Freedom of Information Act request to uncover the true extent of Governor Maura Healey’s migrant budget—a budget that’s been kept hidden from public view.
Amy Carnevale, representing the Massachusetts GOP, didn’t mince words. “The Healey-Driscoll Administration has shrouded nearly $1 billion spent in secrecy, leaving Massachusetts residents in the dark,” she told Fox News. And it’s not just the money—over 600 incidents involving police, fire, and EMTs have been swept under the rug. This administration is stonewalling journalists, blocking any attempt to bring the truth to light.
But Massachusetts isn’t alone. New York is facing a financial disaster of its own. The state comptroller estimates that by 2025, the migrant crisis will have drained $4.3 billion from state taxpayers. And in New York City, the bill is expected to hit $3 billion in fiscal year 2024 alone. FAIR’s estimates are even more staggering: New York’s illegal migrants and their children already cost taxpayers nearly $10 billion last year.
This isn’t just about emergency housing and aid. FAIR looked at the full scope of services being exploited: education, medical care, law enforcement, legal costs, and welfare. And the numbers speak for themselves. Across the country, from California to Texas, from Florida to New Jersey, states are hemorrhaging billions.
California, predictably, leads the pack with nearly $31 billion spent to care for illegal immigrants and their children. Texas follows with over $13 billion, and Florida isn’t far behind at more than $8 billion. In total, 19 states have been forced to shell out over $1 billion each. Even states like West Virginia, where the costs are comparatively lower, still spent over $33 million—money that could have been used to support their own citizens.
And what about the argument that illegal migrants pay their fair share in taxes? According to FAIR, the tax contributions of illegal migrants amounted to about $32 billion. But that still leaves a whopping $150 billion in costs that American taxpayers are left to cover. Ira Mehlman from FAIR put it bluntly: “The argument that illegal aliens pay more in taxes than they use in services is completely misleading.”
Let’s not forget the human toll, either. More than 1.3 million people were released into the U.S. between March 2023 and July 2024, thanks to the federal government’s weak and permissive policies. And that’s not counting the “gotaways”—those who slipped in undetected.
Chris Clem, former Border Patrol chief in Arizona’s Yuma sector, didn’t mince words: “It’s an atrocity to spend taxpayer money to support and help people that don’t even have the lawful right to be here.” And he’s right. While Americans struggle to make ends meet, illegal migrants are being handed opportunities that you and I could only dream of.
So, what’s the takeaway? The migrant crisis is far more costly than most Americans realize. It’s not just a border issue—it’s a national crisis that’s draining our resources, overwhelming our states, and putting an unbearable burden on you, the taxpayer. It’s time we demand accountability, transparency, and above all, a government that puts American citizens first.
