There are moments when our elected officials reveal who they truly are—and, folks, yesterday was one of those moments. President Biden, the so-called leader of our great nation, managed to insult the memory of thousands of American lives lost on September 11, 2001, with a careless and downright insulting remark: “do 9/11.” Yes, you heard that right. The President of the United States, in all his supposed wisdom, referred to one of the darkest days in American history as though it were just another item on his calendar.

Joanne Barbara, the wife of FDNY Chief Gerard A. Barbara who was killed in the attacks, didn’t hold back as she called out Biden for his disgraceful comment at a ceremony honoring her late husband. “The elected officials here today show their respect and reverence to the families on Sept. 11, or — in our president’s words — ’do 9/11,’ quite a flippant remark,” Barbara said, reminding us all that the pain of that day still lingers deeply for the families of the 2,977 innocent lives stolen by evil.

Let’s be clear: Joanne Barbara’s words are a sobering reminder that the 9/11 families live with this tragedy every single day. They don’t have the luxury of “scheduling” their grief or dismissing it with a flippant comment. And they certainly don’t need to hear such dismissive words from the man who is supposed to stand with them, shoulder to shoulder, in their enduring fight for justice.

But it doesn’t stop there. Joanne Barbara also had a few choice words for our government’s disgraceful handling of justice for the 9/11 attackers. This summer, there was an “outrageous” plea deal nearly handed out to the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and his terrorist cronies—a deal that would have let these monsters off the hook. Only after a public outcry did Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin finally revoke the agreement on August 2. And why, you might ask? Because of the relentless fight from the 9/11 families. “If not for the 9/11 families, who knows what would have transpired?” Barbara rightly pointed out.

It has been 23 long years since that fateful day, and yet the families of those who perished are still waiting for the justice they were promised. Joanne Barbara’s powerful message rings true: these families deserve more than just empty words from politicians. They deserve accountability, they deserve respect, and most importantly, they deserve justice.

President Biden’s careless “do 9/11” remark isn’t just a slip of the tongue—it’s a slap in the face to every American who lived through that horrific day, and it’s a betrayal of the solemn promise that we would never forget. It’s time our leaders started acting like it.
