The family of Tyler Robinson — the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk — says politics don’t tell the whole story. His grandmother insists the Robinsons are a Trump-loving, Republican household, and she’s stunned that her shy grandson is now at the center of one of the year’s most explosive political murders.

Speaking to the Daily Mail on Friday, Debbie Robinson, 69, pushed back at claims her grandson’s actions were politically motivated by left-wing ideology.

“My son, his dad, is a Republican for Trump,” she said. “Most of my family members are Republican. I don’t know any single one who’s a Democrat.”

Debbie described Tyler as quiet and unassuming: “He is the shyest person. He has never, ever spoke politics to me at all. He’s never, ever gotten in trouble in his life.”

President Donald Trump announced Friday morning that Robinson had been taken into custody after a days-long manhunt. Kirk, 31, was gunned down Wednesday night while taking questions at Utah Valley University. The killing, caught on cellphone video, rattled the MAGA movement and left Trump supporters demanding swift justice.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed Robinson’s father, Matt, 48, turned his son in after a confession. “The family did the right thing, as painful as it must have been,” Cox said.

Robinson is expected to be formally charged next week. Trump told Fox News he hopes the death penalty is on the table. “I hope he’s punished to the fullest extent of the law,” the president said.

Public records confirm both of Robinson’s parents are registered Republicans. His mother, Amber, 44, is a licensed social worker. His father runs a small countertop and cabinetry business in Washington, Utah. Both parents hold hunting licenses, and Amber once bragged on Facebook that one of Tyler’s brothers was a “gun toting, cowboy loving, brilliant kid.”

Despite the family’s political background, officials say Robinson had expressed hostility toward Kirk in the weeks leading up to the shooting. Governor Cox revealed that Robinson’s roommate provided Discord messages and a handwritten note mentioning bullet engravings and details about a hidden rifle.

Discord released its own statement denying their platform was used to plan the assassination. “These were communications between the suspect’s roommate and a friend after the shooting, recounting the contents of a note left elsewhere,” said Jud Hoffman, the company’s vice president of trust and safety.

Before Robinson’s arrest, police detained and released two other suspects. Now, investigators say they are confident they have the right man.

The shocking assassination has left the MAGA base both heartbroken and furious. Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA in 2012, was seen by many conservatives as one of the most influential young voices on the right.

For Debbie Robinson, the grandmother caught between grief and disbelief, the politics mean little compared to the family turmoil. “I’m just so confused,” she admitted.

    1. Perhaps he had homosexual tendencies and family had no idea. Why else would he be so hateful towards Charlie Kirk, if not political morally he may have been under conviction. The devil used him to shut the mouth of a Christian soldier who courageously spoke the truth.

  1. Among the 12 Apostles, one was Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus; Unfortunately we do have very bad apples in our families!
