Southport, North Carolina was rocked by terror Saturday night when a gunman opened fire from a boat into a packed waterfront restaurant, killing three people and leaving at least five more clinging to life.

Authorities identified the shooter as Nigel Max Edge, 40, a local man with a troubled past and a reputation for filing lawsuits against police. He is now charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.

“This was a highly premeditated attack,” Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said during a tense press briefing Sunday morning. “We believe the location itself was deliberately targeted.”

Witnesses say Edge pulled up in a small boat around 9:30 p.m. outside the American Fish Company, a popular dockside bar and restaurant. Without warning, he unleashed a barrage of bullets on diners enjoying a late summer night.

Panic erupted as patrons scrambled for cover. “It sounded like firecrackers at first, then people were screaming and hitting the floor,” said Melissa Bryant, a Wilmington resident who was dining nearby. “You could see the flashes coming from the boat.”

The gunman sped away down the Intracoastal Waterway, but his escape didn’t last long. The U.S. Coast Guard spotted him loading his boat onto a trailer in nearby Oak Island less than half an hour later. Officers swarmed the scene and took him into custody without incident.

Edge, who once claimed to be a combat veteran suffering from PTSD, had long been on the radar of local law enforcement. Oak Island Police Chief Charlie Morris said Edge was “familiar” to officers, often seen loitering near the town pier.

“He filed numerous lawsuits against our department and the town in recent years,” Morris confirmed. “We never saw this coming, but he clearly carried a lot of resentment.”

Court records show Edge changed his name several years ago. Though known to police, officials say he had no serious criminal record prior to Saturday’s bloodshed.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the dead. Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David said one of the wounded is “clinging to life” in a local hospital.

“Sadly, many of the victims were not even from here,” David added. “They were vacationers simply enjoying our community. It’s heartbreaking.”

Residents described the violence as surreal in a small town better known for fishing trips and beach getaways. “Southport is supposed to be peaceful,” said local business owner Joe Reynolds. “We’ve never seen anything like this.”

By early Sunday, President Donald Trump addressed the massacre from Washington, calling it “another senseless act of violence carried out by a very disturbed individual.” The president vowed his administration would “stand with the victims and their families” while pressing for “swift justice.”

Trump has repeatedly touted his crackdown on violent crime during his second term, but the North Carolina shooting is certain to reignite debate over gun laws and mental health resources for veterans.

Edge is being held without bond and faces additional weapons charges. Prosecutors say more charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

For now, Southport is left to grieve. A makeshift memorial of flowers and candles has already begun to grow outside the American Fish Company, where a night of laughter turned into a nightmare.

“This community is shaken,” Chief Coring admitted. “But we will not let one man’s violence define us.”
