The Shoshone County community is reeling after Sheriff Holly Lindsey abruptly resigned following her involvement in an off-duty hit-and-run.
Lindsey, who had spent 21 years with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in Wallace, Idaho officially stepped down on Wednesday. Her resignation came just a day after the department revealed she had been involved in a traffic accident in her personal vehicle while off duty.
According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, Lindsey’s car struck a fixed object. No injuries were reported. Beyond confirming it was a hit-and-run, authorities have not released additional details.
In her resignation letter, Lindsey reflected on her long career but didn’t address the accident. “I have been serving as a Shoshone County Law Enforcement Officer for the past 21 years, and it has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” she wrote. “I have loved this community with everything that I have, but it is with a heavy heart that I must resign from the position of Shoshone County Sheriff. I appreciate the community and fellow first responders that have supported me throughout my career. It is with great hope that I have left our beautiful county better than when I started.”
Undersheriff Lance Stuzke will step in as interim sheriff until the Board of County Commissioners appoints a replacement. The sheriff’s office has asked the community to respect Lindsey’s decades of service and expressed that she will be “greatly missed.”
Lindsey made history as the county’s first female sheriff when she was appointed in 2022, following the retirement of Sheriff Mike Gunderson. At the time, she told the Shoshone News-Press, “It’s surreal. I feel like I’m watching it from above and watching somebody else with their life. I never thought this would happen and here it is.”
Her sudden resignation has left many in the roughly 14,000-resident county confused, with social media buzzing with questions. “Guess I’m confused. What does one have to do with the other?” one resident asked, referring to the hit-and-run and Lindsey’s resignation. Another commented, “Why would she just up and resign like that?”
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office has promised to share the results of its investigation with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office but said no further details will be released at this time.

Somehow I don’t think this is the first time she has done something like this, just the first time she got caught. I don’t understand in the article where the person said I don’t get how one has to do with the other. seriously? I going to guess she had been drinking and that’s why she left otherwise if she’s such an upstanding person why would she?
Stupid decision have consequences. She represent the law and doing what she did shows she is not a woman of integrity. Was she aDEI hire?
why is a state never mentioned in this?
