A weekend trip to Las Vegas for a youth dance competition ended in tragedy after police say a mother shot her 11-year-old daughter inside a hotel room before turning the gun on herself.

Officers discovered two bodies Sunday inside a room at the Rio Hotel & Casino. Authorities are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.

While officials have not formally released the identities, Utah outlets KUTV and Fox 13 reported that the victims are believed to be 38-year-old Tawnia McGeehan and her daughter, Addi Smith, 11. The pair had traveled from Utah to Las Vegas for a dance contest and were reported missing on February 14.

According to police, officers initially responded to a welfare check at the hotel Sunday morning. They knocked on the door and called out for more than 15 minutes but received no response and left the scene.

Later that afternoon, hotel security went to the room after relatives contacted the hotel expressing concern. After knocking and again receiving no response, security entered the room and found the mother and daughter dead.

Police said the mother fatally shot her daughter before taking her own life. Authorities also confirmed that no gunshots had been reported by hotel guests. A note was found in the room, but its contents have not been released as the investigation continues.

Addi was a member of the Utah Xtreme Cheer troupe, which shared a heartfelt tribute following the devastating news.

“With the heaviest hearts, we share the devastating news that our sweet athlete Addi has passed away,” a spokesperson said. “We are completely heartbroken. No words do the situation justice. She was so beyond loved, and she will always be a part of the UXC family.”

The organization asked for privacy for the family as they navigate what they described as an unimaginable loss.

Another cheer organization, Utah Fusion All-Stars, also honored Addi, remembering her as a bright presence in the gym.

“She will always be remembered for her sweet smile and light that she brought to her teams and to our gym,” the group shared.

  1. IF MOTHER WOULD NOT HAVE A GUN, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE KILLED HER DAUGHTER AND HER SELF.

    1. People such as that find crazy ways to do their deeds, the amazing thing is no one reported hearing the shots, where was house keeping and did the family have problems before she went on the trip?
