A California nurse has won a $300,000 lawsuit against a major cruise line after claiming she was overserved tequila to the point of blacking out — leading to a terrifying fall.
Diana Sanders, 45, says she was given at least 14 shots of tequila in under nine hours while aboard a Carnival Radiance cruise on January 5, 2024.
According to the lawsuit, things took a dangerous turn late that night.
Due to her level of intoxication, Sanders allegedly fell down a staircase between around 11:45 p.m. and just after midnight. The fall left her with serious injuries, including a concussion, back and tailbone damage, bruising, and a possible traumatic brain injury.
Even more disturbing, Sanders says she woke up at the bottom of the stairs in a crew-only area with no memory of how she got there.
“Waking up after blacking out… and not knowing what happened was extremely frustrating,” she said, adding that she felt confused and mistreated when trying to get answers.
Her legal team argued that cruise staff should have stopped serving her alcohol once she became visibly intoxicated — and that they failed in their duty to keep passengers safe.
A Miami federal jury ultimately agreed.
They found the cruise line 60% responsible for what happened and awarded Sanders $300,000 in damages — even more than the $250,000 her team originally requested. Sanders was found 40% responsible.
The case is notable because lawsuits like this rarely make it all the way to trial — and even more rarely end in a win for the passenger.
The cruise company, however, is not backing down. Representatives say they disagree with the verdict and plan to appeal.

I can’t imagine being 45 and drinking that much. Most normal people would have stopped after maybe 3 or 4 before you were completely plastered. Take some responsibility so sick of crap like this.
