A quiet school day in Turkey turned into absolute chaos after a heavily armed teenager carried out a deadly shooting that left multiple people dead and many more injured.
Authorities say a 14-year-old student brought five guns to school in his backpack before opening fire inside classrooms in Kahramanmaras province on Wednesday. The attack left 10 people dead and at least a dozen others wounded, sending students and teachers scrambling for their lives.
Terrifying video from the scene shows students jumping out of windows to escape the gunfire, while others rushed through the courtyard in panic. Gunshots can be heard ringing out as the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Officials say the teen, described as an eighth grader, used weapons believed to belong to his father. He reportedly entered two classrooms and fired randomly, causing mass casualties in minutes.
The suspect later died during the incident. Authorities say he shot himself, though it’s still unclear if it was intentional or happened in the chaos.
Police have since detained the boy’s father as the investigation continues.
Adding to the shock, officials revealed the teen had reportedly used an image of a U.S. mass shooter as his profile picture on WhatsApp — raising more questions about what may have influenced the attack.
The horrifying incident came just one day after another school shooting in Turkey, where an 18-year-old opened fire at his former high school, injuring 16 people before killing himself during a standoff with police.
That attack, which left several students wounded, had no clear motive.
Now, two shootings in just days have shaken a country where school violence like this is extremely rare. Turkey has strict gun laws, including licensing requirements and background checks, making the back-to-back attacks even more alarming.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed that anyone found responsible for negligence will be held accountable as investigations into both incidents ramp up.
