A heartbreaking tragedy out of New London has left a community in shock after a toddler who wandered away from home was found dead just hours later.

The 3-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, disappeared in the early morning hours of April 13. According to police, he was last seen around midnight near a local school not far from his home.

His father reported him missing shortly before 5 a.m., triggering a large-scale search effort that quickly brought together multiple law enforcement agencies and community members.

What followed was a desperate race against time.

Search crews flooded the area before sunrise, with drones in the air and officers combing nearby streets, neighborhoods, and waterways. Residents described seeing an overwhelming police presence as the search intensified.

“He was found,” authorities later confirmed—but the outcome was devastating.

At around 7:17 a.m., the child was discovered in a nearby river and rushed to a local hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead later that morning.

Officials say it’s still unclear how long the boy had been in the water or exactly where he entered the river. Early reports suggest he may have wandered from his home and somehow made his way into the water before being carried by the current.

Police had earlier described the child as wearing an orange Chicago Bears shirt and a diaper when he went missing, and said he had walked several blocks from his home.

As news spread, members of the community took to social media to share updates and assist in the search, with some even joining efforts on the ground.

Now, questions remain about how the tragedy unfolded—but for many, the focus is on a life lost far too soon.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

  1. As a researcher / investigator; this incident is highly questionable. There is something amiss with the parents or the child or both for a child to still be in diapers at 3 years of age – with the home not locked down at night so the child cannot get out on their own, and so I do not think the child got out “on his own”. My first instinct is it could be a case of getting rid of a ‘problem child’ in a way that appears naturally tragic. — I hope the authorities fully investigate this incident as it has all the earmarks of a possible crime.

    1. I think there are kids that still might wear a diaper at night at 3 but not during the day. If could also have been a pull up and they just said diaper by mistake. I think it’s strange too that your child can get out like that, you should have a lock higher up like a hook & eye. My first thought was maybe something happened at home and they put him somewhere to cover it up. Sad that’s where we go in our minds these days.

      1. Oh yes – there are children who have not learned full control of their bathroom needs by this age, but it is always the case of parents being totally lazy about their parental duties with total disregard for their child’s need to learn body function control – or the child has physiological problems that prevent them from controlling their bathroom needs, and in that case – it will never change and the child will need special education facilities all their lives, and that presents a perpetual headache of an ongoing problem for the parents raising that child, which they may have decided they are not going to live with for 20 years or more.

It may be difficult to totally lock down a home with a child 7 years old or older, but a 3 year old is not at all difficult to keep from leaving the home when the parents are asleep. No matter what you think – it is obvious they totally failed at that aspect of parenting – and that raises major red flags when a tragedy like this occurs – and as I said; I hope the authorities see all these red flags exactly for what they are and do an extensive investigation into this little boys death as a possible crime.

      2. You are also correct that something may have happened to the child and the parents put him in the river under the cover and quiet of the night to cover it up. — Our minds should indeed “go there” when something like this happens to such a young child. – It’s a matter of looking at the facts as they present themselves and logically go from there, and all of us should do that with everything in our lives.
