Avery Nissen

What started as a relaxing snorkel trip off the coast of Hawaii turned into pure chaos when a passenger allegedly launched a brutal knife attack on the boat’s captain in the middle of the ocean.

Authorities say 21-year-old Avery Nissen, who was visiting from Kansas, is now facing multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, after the shocking incident unfolded Thursday afternoon near Kailua-Kona.

According to police, Nissen was on a three-hour snorkel tour aboard a fishing vessel with several other passengers when, without warning, he allegedly attacked the 62-year-old captain using a fillet knife.

The scene quickly spiraled as others on board rushed to stop him, eventually restraining Nissen before things got even worse.

The boat was forced to head back to shore, and emergency crews were waiting when it arrived at Honokōhau Harbor around 3:21 p.m. Officers took Nissen into custody as soon as the vessel docked.

The captain suffered a stab wound to the abdomen along with multiple cuts to his head and hands. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators say the motive behind the attack is still unclear, leaving many wondering what could have triggered such a violent outburst in the middle of what was supposed to be a peaceful ocean excursion.

Nissen is currently being held on more than $1.5 million bail and is expected to appear in court in Kona.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
