A peaceful afternoon at a local park turned into a devastating tragedy after a mother and her young son lost their lives in a heartbreaking water incident in west London.

Police have confirmed the victims were a 34-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son who got into “difficulty” in the water at Elthorne Park in Ealing on Saturday. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 4:30 p.m., after reports that the pair were in distress.

When first responders arrived, both the mother and child were pulled from the water. Despite efforts to save them, they were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later confirmed that, after further investigation, the incident is being treated as a tragic accident with no suspicion of foul play.

In a statement released Sunday evening, officials said, “Further inquiries carried out by officers into the incident have established it was a tragic accident and the deaths of the woman and child who very sadly lost their lives are being treated as non-suspicious.”

Police also confirmed that the victims’ next of kin have been informed and are now being supported by specially trained officers during what they described as an incredibly difficult time.

“The family has requested that their privacy be respected,” officials added.

Detective Superintendent Pete Thackray, from the Metropolitan Police’s West Area Command Unit, acknowledged the intense and emotional response from those at the scene.

He praised both first responders and members of the public who stepped in to help, saying they “did their very best in an incredibly challenging situation.”

The tragedy has shaken the local community, with tributes beginning to pour in.

Jon Ball, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Ealing Common, shared his condolences publicly, writing that his thoughts are with the family affected by the “tragic accident” at Elthorne Park.
