A devastating train crash near Indonesia’s capital has left multiple people dead and dozens injured, as rescuers raced against time to pull victims from the wreckage.

Officials say at least four people were killed and more than 30 others were hurt after two trains collided late Monday, April 27, near Jakarta. The crash happened at East Bekasi Station in West Java, according to state railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia.

Early reports indicate a long-distance train slammed into the rear of a commuter train that had been stopped at the station. Authorities say the impacted carriage was designated as a women-only car, adding another layer of shock to the tragedy.

Images from the scene show the front of one train piercing into the back of the other, with twisted metal and debris scattered across the tracks as emergency crews worked to reach trapped passengers.

KAI confirmed that four people have died and at least 38 others were taken for medical treatment. All 240 passengers aboard the long-distance train were safely evacuated, officials said.

“Currently, we are focusing on evacuating passengers and crew, with safety as the top priority,” the company said in a statement, also issuing an apology for the incident and offering condolences to the victims and their families.

First responders were seen cutting through wreckage and pulling survivors from the damaged cars, as fears grew that the number of victims could rise.

Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, a deputy speaker of Indonesia’s parliament, warned that the death toll may increase as rescue efforts continue. “Let us hope the evacuation can be completed quickly,” he said from the crash site.

Authorities have launched an investigation into what caused the collision, with Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri confirming that officials are working to determine how the trains ended up on the same track.

The crash has reignited concerns about rail safety in the region. A similar accident in West Java in 2024 left four people dead and dozens more injured.
