A festive tradition turned deadly in Spain after a well-known cattle breeder was fatally gored during a bull-running event.
Santiago Barrero San Román, 33, died after being attacked by a bull at the San Marcos Festival in the small southern town of Beas de Segura on Friday, April 24.
According to local reports, the bull charged at Román around 7:00 p.m., striking him multiple times and leaving him with severe injuries to his groin, chest, and abdomen. The shocking moment unfolded in front of festivalgoers during the annual celebration, which draws crowds for its traditional bull-running events.
Emergency responders rushed Román to a nearby first-aid station, but his injuries were too severe. He died about an hour later, around 8:00 p.m., as crews attempted to transfer him to a hospital.
Festival organizers confirmed the tragedy in a statement, saying they were “deeply saddened” by the death of a participant during the day’s events. Despite the devastating loss, officials said the festival would continue as planned under existing regulations. However, a moment of silence and a ceremonial trumpet tribute were scheduled to honor Román.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” the town said in its statement.
The loss has sent shockwaves through Spain’s bull-breeding community. The Association of Fighting Bull Breeders also paid tribute, sharing condolences to Román’s loved ones and honoring his legacy.
Román wasn’t just a participant—he was deeply rooted in the tradition. He and his wife, Vanesa, founded the Toros de San Román brand, and he carried on a family legacy as the grandson of respected breeder Antonio San Román.
The San Marcos Festival, which dates back to the 16th century, is known for its high-energy bull runs through the town’s narrow streets, along with music and cultural celebrations. But this year’s event has been overshadowed by a tragedy that has left a community grieving.
