A terrifying scene unfolded at a major U.S. airport when a woman suddenly fell to her death in the middle of the day, leaving witnesses and officials searching for answers.

Authorities say a 38-year-old woman died Saturday after falling approximately 50 feet at Indianapolis International Airport in Marion County. The incident happened just after noon—around 12:15 p.m.—when dispatchers monitoring security cameras reportedly saw her go over the outside edge of Upper Terminal Drive and plunge to the ground below.

Emergency crews rushed in immediately.

Officers with the airport’s police department and firefighters began life-saving efforts as soon as they reached her, working for roughly 30 minutes in an attempt to revive her. Despite those efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials later confirmed the tragedy in a statement, saying a fatality occurred at approximately 12:19 p.m. and that “life-saving measures were administered, but were unsuccessful.” Authorities added that a full investigation is now underway.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office arrived just before 2 p.m. to begin a formal death investigation. As of now, the woman’s identity has not been released, and officials have not said what led to the fall.

Despite the shocking incident, airport operations continued as investigators worked to piece together exactly what happened.

The airport itself has a long history, first opening in 1931. Its current main terminal, the Weir Cook Terminal, opened in November 2008 as part of a $1.1 billion redevelopment. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility was designed with modern, post-9/11 security features and serves as a major travel hub for the region.
