A quiet evening in the Netherlands turned tragic after a man fell from a hot air balloon and landed in a backyard, authorities said.
The fatal incident happened Saturday evening above the Dutch town of Zundert, a community known as the birthplace of legendary artist Vincent van Gogh.
According to local reports, emergency crews rushed to the area after another balloonist nearby reported what had happened. Multiple ambulances, firefighters, police officers and a medical helicopter were sent to the scene.
Search teams began combing the area around Sporthal Onder de Mast, a local sports facility, before the man’s body was found in a garden nearby.
Zundert Mayor Joyce Vermue addressed the tragedy in a statement on Facebook, calling it an “intrusive incident.”
“This evening, an intrusive incident took place in which someone jumped out of a hot air balloon above Zundert,” Vermue said.
“The person ended up in a garden and died. My thoughts and sympathies go out first and foremost to the family and the balloon bearer.”
The mayor said she understood that many residents may have seen the terrifying moment unfold, especially because the weather was pleasant and people were outside.
“I can imagine many residents saw the incident take place,” Vermue said. “The weather is nice, many people are outside and also when a balloon passes over our village we watch.”
Officials later announced that a community gathering would be held for residents who needed support after witnessing or hearing about the incident.
In a follow-up statement, Vermue said support services would be made available to those affected, including first responders, Victim Help Netherlands, social workers and public health officials.
“Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the bereaved, the balloon operator, fellow passengers,” she said. “We also realize very well that many people have seen or heard about this.”
The mayor invited residents to come together at town hall to talk, listen and find support.
“Here you can share your story, listen to others and find support,” she said.
Police are now investigating the incident, according to reports.
The tragedy has shaken Zundert, where what should have been a calm evening turned into a heartbreaking emergency witnessed by residents on the ground and others in the sky.
No further details about the victim have been released.
