At least 51 people are dead or missing after a migrant boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea while traveling toward Europe earlier this month.

The boat sank off the eastern coast of Libya on June 12, according to the Abreen group, which tracks migrant movements in eastern Libya.

So far, 11 bodies have been found, while another 40 people remain missing. Ten people survived the disaster.

The Libyan coast guard and the Red Crescent reportedly said bodies had been washing ashore in the city of Tobruk over the past 24 hours as recovery efforts continued.

The tragedy is the latest deadly incident involving migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Libya, a route that has become one of the most dangerous in the world for people trying to reach Europe.

In February, the International Organization for Migration reported another devastating shipwreck off Libya’s coast. On Feb. 9, the organization said 53 migrants were declared dead or missing after a rubber boat carrying 55 people capsized north of Zuwara.

That boat reportedly sank on Feb. 5 after taking on water.

Only two Nigerian women survived. One of the women reportedly lost her husband, while the other said she lost her two babies.

The International Organization for Migration has also warned about so-called “invisible” shipwrecks in the Central Mediterranean, where boats disappear or sink without being fully documented.

In January alone, at least 375 migrants were reported dead or missing following those unrecorded wrecks, according to data previously collected by the organization.

The group said many of those tragedies were never officially recorded because of extreme weather and difficult conditions at sea.
