Two young men were killed and two others were injured in a devastating freak accident after a massive oak tree crashed down onto their pickup truck in Middle Georgia.

The tragedy happened around 6:15 a.m. Friday, June 19, as four men were riding along Pea Ridge Road near Highway 441 in Putnam County.

According to local reports, the truck was traveling through the area when an oak tree along the wooded roadside suddenly uprooted and fell directly onto the vehicle.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said the tree crushed the entire top of the truck’s cab.

“An oak tree along the wooded area on the side of the road just suddenly fell, crushed the entire top of the cab, and the two passengers in the back seat were basically killed instantly,” Sills told WMAZ.

The two men in the back seat were pronounced dead at the scene.

They have been identified as 24-year-old Logan Christopher Deal and 25-year-old Jakob Hogan Tapley, both of Ellabell, Georgia, according to Putnam County Coroner Hollis Harrison.

The driver and front-seat passenger survived the crash but were injured and taken to a hospital in Macon for treatment.

Authorities said the accident came after days of storms and heavy rain in the region. While tornado warnings had been issued, Sills said there had been no recent tornadoes in Putnam County.

Instead, investigators believe the saturated ground likely played a major role. The intense rain soaked the soil, making it easier for trees to uproot and fall along roads and properties.

Sills said the oak tree that hit the truck was not dead or rotting.

“It’s really a freak accident result of nature,” he told WMAZ. “The tree wasn’t rotten; it was a healthy tree. Oak trees, especially, they have very shallow roots.”

The loss has devastated the victims’ loved ones.

Timothy Thompson Jr., Tapley’s cousin, told WJCL that Logan and Jakob were extremely close and shared many of the same interests, including gaming and going to comic conventions.

“What was truly special about the two of them was their bond with each other,” Thompson said. “Logan and Jakob were entirely inseparable.”

He said the two friends did everything together in life, making their deaths even more heartbreaking.

“They were incredible guys, the best friends anyone could ask for, and they leave behind a family that loves them beyond words,” he said.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also shared condolences after the tragedy.

“Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by the loss of these two young men in the wake of last night’s storms,” Kemp wrote on social media. “Our prayers are with their families, and with their friends still recovering.”
