An American woman has died after falling from the 18th floor of a luxury hotel in Cancun, Mexico, as police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
The tragedy unfolded Thursday night at the Breathless resort and spa, where the woman and her husband were reportedly staying as guests.
According to local reports, the woman’s husband alerted hotel staff and tearfully told them that his wife had done something “outrageous.”
Security personnel rushed to the scene and discovered that the woman had fallen nearly 150 feet.
Emergency crews were called to the resort, but the woman showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mexican authorities have now opened an investigation into exactly what happened.
The woman’s husband was taken into custody and is being questioned by police as investigators work to piece together the events leading up to the fatal fall.
Authorities have not publicly identified the woman or disclosed whether they suspect foul play.
The hotel has also been contacted for comment.
The death comes just weeks after another tourist tragedy in Cancun.
A 60-year-old British vacationer drowned after reportedly being swept away by strong waves while swimming with his children at San Miguelito beach.
The man had allegedly entered the water despite a red flag warning.
His two children were rescued, but the father was pulled from the ocean unconscious and later pronounced dead despite attempts to revive him.
Cancun remains one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations, drawing millions of tourists to its white-sand beaches, clear Caribbean waters and nightlife every year.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the American woman’s death as they question her husband and work to determine how she fell from the hotel.
