“You’re not going to hear me defending the Democratic Party on this.” — Bernie Sanders

In a fiery exchange that laid bare America’s broken campaign finance system, progressive icon Bernie Sanders and podcast giant Joe Rogan squared off over billionaire influence in politics—targeting both Elon Musk’s $270 million effort to re-elect Donald Trump and Kamala Harris’ $1.5 billion blitz during her short-lived campaign.

The tension unfolded on Tuesday’s episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, as Sanders renewed his long-standing war against the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. Calling it “maybe the worst decision the Supreme Court has ever made,” Sanders warned it had opened the floodgates for billionaires to buy elections.

“Elon Musk spent $270 million to help elect Donald Trump,” Sanders said. “That’s not democracy. That’s absurd.”

Rogan, known for pushing guests to defend their stances, wasn’t buying the one-sided critique. He shot back with a pointed reminder: “Didn’t Kamala Harris’ campaign spend over a billion dollars too?”

Sanders acknowledged the massive war chests on both sides, saying, “You’re not going to hear me defending the Democratic Party on this issue… Democratic billionaires put money into Kamala and other candidates as well.”

Musk’s Mega Millions and a New Political Reality

After Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania earlier this year, Musk dramatically entered the 2024 election fray—publicly endorsing the former president and injecting $240 million into a pro-Trump Super PAC called America PAC.

The SpaceX and Tesla titan even began handing out $1 million checks at his rallies to attendees who signed America PAC petitions, a move critics called “grotesque” and “legalized bribery.”

Once Trump took office, Musk was rewarded with leadership of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency—nicknamed “DOGE”—where he slashed funding for USAID and other federal programs, claiming he was cutting “waste, fraud, and abuse.” The real effect, according to Sanders, was the dismantling of critical social services.

“Elon Musk became the most powerful person in government without ever being elected,” Sanders said. “That’s what this money does—it buys power, unchecked.”

Kamala’s $1.5B Flameout: A Warning from the Left

While Sanders focused on Musk, Rogan pointed to another disturbing trend—the runaway spending from the Democratic side.

Kamala Harris’ campaign raised an unprecedented $1.5 billion in just 15 weeks, only to bow out with $20 million in debt. Much of the money came from Silicon Valley donors and Democratic megadonors eager to block Trump’s return.

“She burned through over a billion dollars in a couple months,” Rogan said, shaking his head. “It’s insane. This isn’t democracy—it’s just a game for the ultra-rich.”

A Broken System with No Heroes

Sanders, to his credit, didn’t shy away from calling out both sides.

“I’ve been saying this for years: both parties are addicted to billionaire money,” he told Rogan. “This isn’t just a Republican issue. This is about whether we want to live in a country where ordinary people still have a voice.”

As 2028 looms, Americans are facing a political system awash in dark money, billion-dollar PACs, and tech kingmakers pulling the strings. Whether the outrage from voices like Sanders and Rogan will translate into reform—or more disillusionment—remains to be seen.

But one thing is clear: the era of small-donor democracy is on life support.

“The government’s for sale,” Rogan said bluntly. “And the billionaires? They’re buying.”
