House Republicans Sound the Alarm: ‘Anti-ICE Rhetoric Is Fueling Attacks on Agents’

As President Donald Trump pushes forward with the most aggressive deportation campaign in decades, House Republicans are warning that Democrats’ hostile rhetoric against immigration officers is now turning dangerous—and deadly.

A string of violent assaults against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers has sparked outrage on Capitol Hill. GOP lawmakers say the blame lies squarely with what they call “reckless” and “radical” language from the left.

“When elected officials vilify law enforcement, the public responds—and not in a good way,” Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) told reporters Monday. “ICE agents are being hunted while doing their jobs. This is a direct result of Democrat messaging.”

Since President Trump signed his controversial “Big, Beautiful Border Bill” in March, which ramped up enforcement powers and removed barriers to expedited deportations, protests have exploded in major cities. But now the political heat is turning physical.

On Saturday night, an off-duty CBP agent was shot in New York’s Riverside Park. Federal officials say the attack was targeted. A second suspect—identified as 32-year-old Dominican national Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez—was arrested late Sunday. He had previously been detained at the southern border in April 2023 but was released under Biden-era policies.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem condemned the attack and called it a “consequence of sanctuary city policies.”

“When cities shield criminal aliens and vilify federal agents, this is what happens,” Noem said during a press conference Monday. “ICE agents are now facing an unprecedented threat level.”

As violence rises, Senate Democrats have introduced a bill that would force immigration agents to identify themselves clearly and publicly—no masks, no anonymity. The proposal is being led by Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), who argue that Trump’s policies enable “unchecked abuse.”

But Republicans are calling the bill a blueprint for targeting agents.

“They want to make ICE agents walking bullseyes,” said Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.). “You remove their anonymity while simultaneously calling them fascists? It’s a recipe for assassination.”

McClintock, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, didn’t mince words.

“Without borders, we don’t have a country,” he said. “We suffered through Biden’s open-border chaos. Now, under Trump, we’re cleaning it up. And Democrats can’t stand it.”

Violent confrontations have erupted nationwide. Over the Fourth of July weekend, demonstrators clashed with federal officers at an ICE facility in Portland. In Texas, two separate ambushes left four immigration officers injured. And in Los Angeles, protests devolved into full-blown riots outside an ICE detention center.

Rep. Michael Guest (R-Miss.) pointed fingers at local leaders.

“Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass have turned California into a battlefield,” Guest said. “They’re actively undermining law enforcement. What do you expect when you call ICE agents ‘racist thugs’?”

Mayor Karen Bass recently signed executive orders blocking ICE operations in LA and launching a taxpayer-funded support program for families affected by deportations. Republicans say that only adds fuel to the fire.

“When you reward illegal behavior and demonize those enforcing the law, don’t be shocked when violence follows,” Guest said.

Rep. Mariannette Miller‑Meeks (R-Iowa) says the anti-ICE movement has gone too far.

“It’s unreal. These are officers risking their lives every day. They’re not the villains—criminal illegals are,” she said. “The American people need to wake up.”

Republicans are now calling on President Trump to boost protection for ICE and CBP officers and push back harder on what they describe as “left-wing incitement.”

“This is more than politics,” Clyde added. “This is about life and death.”

Neither the offices of Sens. Booker or Padilla, nor President Biden’s spokesperson, responded to requests for comment.
