A Royal Caribbean passenger was caught on camera flipping headfirst over a glass railing on the world’s largest cruise ship in a wild moment of poolside madness — all because of a pair of sunglasses.

The shocking incident happened aboard the Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s newest and most extravagant mega-ship, while it was sailing through the Caribbean. The footage, which first surfaced on the Instagram account Only in Florida, shows the male passenger dangling dangerously over the side of the Hideaway Pool before tumbling over the edge — triggering gasps from stunned onlookers.

“He just went over! What the hell?” one woman is heard yelling in the background of the now-viral clip.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly trying to retrieve his sunglasses when he flipped over the glass wall that surrounds the ship’s adult-only infinity pool, known as the Hideaway Pool, located on Deck 15.

Rather than plunging into the open sea, the man landed in the pool gutter — a narrow safety ledge just beneath the pool’s edge designed to catch overflow water. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed that the passenger was not injured and was immediately helped by crew members.

“A guest accidentally fell onto the pool gutter after reaching over to retrieve their sunglasses. Our crew immediately attended to the guest and fortunately the guest did not experience any injuries,” a spokesperson told PEOPLE.

While no one was hurt, critics are already questioning how easy it is for a guest to slip over the pool’s barrier — especially on a ship that’s marketed as a family-friendly floating city.

The Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s crown jewel — a 20-deck, 250,800-ton behemoth capable of housing up to 7,600 passengers. Launched in January 2024, the ship features an onboard waterpark, massive entertainment zones, and what the cruise line boasts as the first suspended infinity pool at sea — the Hideaway Pool.

That very pool, designed to give adults panoramic ocean views while lounging in style, now has critics calling for added safety measures.

“It’s not just about opulence, it’s about common sense,” said maritime safety consultant Brian Fisher. “If a man can tip over like that trying to grab shades, what happens when kids are running around or guests have been drinking?”

This isn’t the first time the Icon of the Seas has made headlines for unsettling reasons. Just three days before the pool incident, a crew member tragically died after falling overboard off the coast of the Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that the man — who has not been named — plunged into the ocean following what NBC affiliate WTVJ later reported was a violent altercation involving a knife. The crew member allegedly stabbed a fellow worker before jumping overboard.

“Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement. “We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones.”

Both incidents have cast a shadow over the record-breaking vessel, which was previously celebrated for revolutionizing the cruise industry. Now, some are wondering if the Icon is veering into disaster-prone territory.

Despite all the bells and whistles — from luxury dining to on-board surfing simulators — Icon of the Seas is now under scrutiny for guest safety. And while the sunglasses tumble ended without injury, the dramatic footage could prove to be a PR nightmare.

Royal Caribbean has not announced any changes to the design or safety protocols surrounding the Hideaway Pool as of this writing.

For now, passengers aboard the world’s largest ship might want to think twice before leaning too far over the edge — especially for something as trivial as a $10 pair of shades.

  1. Cruising at one time was a time when you can relax. We have done seven cruises with Holland America and had no problems .But with these massive ships which have as many as a small town on it ,you can be assured there are many creepy ones .Also when they cannot book all rooms they offer their rooms at a discount .It would be nice to go back to smaller ,safer ships. In fact I would only go cruising if it is for seniors only .I am not prejudice , I am just fed up with the behavior if young people today
