Conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk has died at age 31 after being shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The shooting sent shockwaves through the nation, sparking outrage, grief, and renewed concerns about political violence on college campuses.

Kirk was hosting the first stop of his “American Comeback Tour” when chaos erupted. Witnesses say the 31-year-old was in the middle of answering a question at his “Prove Me Wrong” table when a shot rang out. The bullet struck him in the neck. Students and attendees screamed as people scrambled for safety. “He was in the middle of a sentence,” one eyewitness told local reporters. “Then I heard a pop and saw blood pouring from his neck. People were running everywhere.”

Authorities immediately locked down the Utah Valley University campus as police went building to building clearing students and faculty. Early reports suggested a suspect was in custody, but officials later clarified that no arrests have been made. The FBI and ATF have joined the investigation, calling it an “active and ongoing threat assessment.”

President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him “a great, and even legendary, patriot.” In his statement, Trump wrote, “No one understood or had the heart of America’s youth better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me. Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika and his family. Charlie, we love you.” Vice President J.D. Vance also released a statement, urging Americans to pray for Kirk’s wife and two young children, adding, “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.”

Kirk leaves behind his wife Erika, a former Miss Arizona USA and podcast host, and their two children — a daughter born in 2022 and an infant son born last year. Erika has often joined Charlie in advocating for faith, family, and traditional values, and together they became one of the most visible young conservative couples in America. Over the summer, Kirk shared a video of his daughter running into his arms on the set of Fox & Friends, captioning it: “This is what it’s all about. Get married. Have kids. Be courageous.”

Founded in 2012 when Kirk was just 18, Turning Point USA has grown into one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in the country. Kirk was widely credited with mobilizing a generation of young voters and strengthening support for President Trump among college students. His “American Comeback Tour” was designed to challenge liberal narratives on campus and energize conservative youth ahead of the 2026 midterms. Utah Valley University was supposed to be the kickoff of 14 scheduled appearances this fall.

Leaders across the political spectrum have condemned the shooting. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson called Kirk “a fighter for free speech and liberty.” Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries also released a rare bipartisan statement, calling the act “a dangerous attack on open debate.” Both chambers of Congress paused legislative business Wednesday afternoon to observe a moment of silence.

The investigation into the shooter’s identity and motive is ongoing, but federal officials are treating the attack as a potential act of politically motivated violence. “We are pursuing all leads,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Monica Wray said in a brief statement. “This was a targeted act, and we are committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice.”

As news of Kirk’s death spreads, vigils are being organized nationwide, and Turning Point USA announced it will hold a memorial rally in Phoenix later this week. Kirk’s supporters are calling on Congress to address escalating threats against conservative speakers on college campuses, while allies warn that America is “at a dangerous crossroads.”

“This isn’t just about Charlie,” one longtime TPUSA volunteer said. “It’s about whether we can have open dialogue without fear of being silenced — or worse.”
