A shocking crash in Arizona has left two kids in the hospital after authorities say a 13-year-old girl stole a car, drove drunk, and rolled the vehicle with an 11-year-old in the passenger seat.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday in Flagstaff, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Officials say the car was stolen from the Flagstaff Police Department before the teen driver took it onto Interstate 40, weaving across the median before speeding past 100 mph.
The joyride ended violently when the car hit a guardrail, flipped multiple times, and slammed into a tree. The crash was so severe the steering wheel broke off and was thrown about 50 feet from the wreck.
Both children were rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police later revealed the 13-year-old had a blood alcohol level of 0.183—more than twice the legal limit for adults, and far above the zero-tolerance rule for anyone under 21.
The teen is now facing DUI charges.
“We’re thankful the kids are okay, but this could’ve ended way worse,” DPS said in a statement. “Juvenile joyriding and underage drinking are extremely dangerous. Talk to your kids about the dangers of drinking and unlicensed driving.”
