A quiet Sunday morning in the Bronx turned into a terrifying scene after a van struck two pedestrians crossing the street—leaving a 71-year-old woman in critical condition.
According to the New York Police Department, the crash happened just before 10:40 a.m. near the intersection of Broadway and West 225th Street in the Marble Hill neighborhood.
Police say the woman and a 64-year-old man were crossing the street when a 41-year-old driver, behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, attempted to make a left turn and collided with both pedestrians.
The van reportedly had a Citi Bike decal on its side, raising questions about its connection to the popular bike-share program.
Both victims were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital following the crash. Authorities say the 64-year-old man is in stable condition, but the 71-year-old woman remains in critical condition as of Sunday night.
The driver stayed at the scene, and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
Lyft, which operates Citi Bike, issued a statement following the incident, saying: “This incident is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with the affected parties. We’re investigating this report and stand ready to assist law enforcement.”
At this time, it remains unclear what led to the crash or whether any charges will be filed.
