A woman in Burke, Virginia, is lucky to be alive after a massive explosion ripped her vehicle apart in seconds.
The blast happened around 7:30 a.m. on April 9 while she was driving a Chrysler Pacifica carrying a propane tank. Investigators believe the tank was leaking — and because it was a cold morning, her windows were likely rolled up, allowing the gas to build up inside the vehicle.
Then came the spark.
Authorities say the woman may have tried to light a cigarette, unknowingly igniting the trapped propane gas and causing a violent explosion.
The force was so intense it blew the roof clean off the van, shattered every window, and tore off the doors. Debris was launched more than 100 feet away, landing in nearby yards.
Neighbors said the blast shook their homes so hard it knocked pictures off the walls.
Despite the destruction, the driver somehow survived.
Witnesses say she was found sitting on a curb nearby, visibly shaken and suffering burns to her arms. Thankfully, police say her injuries were not life-threatening.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly how the propane tank began leaking, but early reports suggest the incident was accidental. A major crimes detective has still been assigned to the case as a precaution.
Propane is commonly used for grills and heating, but it’s highly flammable — especially in enclosed spaces. Experts warn that tanks should always be transported upright, sealed properly, and in well-ventilated areas to prevent dangerous gas buildup.
