A routine flight over one of the world’s most remote regions turned into a nightmare in minutes after a helicopter carrying eight people plunged into dense rainforest, killing everyone on board.

The doomed aircraft, an Airbus H130 operated by PT Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact just five minutes after taking off Thursday from a palm oil plantation in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo. It was supposed to be a short trip — about 150 miles — to another plantation site. It never made it.

Search crews later spotted wreckage buried deep in the jungle, confirming the worst fears. Authorities say all eight people aboard — two crew members and six passengers — were found dead at the crash site.

Officials with Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency confirmed the grim discovery, saying teams battled thick rainforest terrain to recover the bodies. The operation has since been called off after all victims were evacuated.

So far, what caused the helicopter to suddenly drop off radar remains a mystery. Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation says the crash is under active investigation, but no further details have been released.

The tragedy underscores the dangers of flying over Borneo’s vast, unforgiving wilderness — a region known for its dense jungle, unpredictable weather, and limited infrastructure.

At least one of the victims was reportedly Malaysian, highlighting the international toll of the disaster.

This latest crash adds to a troubling string of deadly transportation incidents across Indonesia. Earlier this year, a small plane vanished over Sulawesi, with all 10 passengers later confirmed dead. And just last year, another helicopter carrying eight people disappeared over similar jungle terrain.

The string of disasters has raised renewed questions about aviation safety in the region — especially in remote areas where aircraft often serve as the only lifeline between isolated communities.

For now, families are left grieving, and investigators are racing to figure out how a routine flight turned into a deadly plunge into the jungle in just five minutes.
