A vacation at sea turned tragic after two separate incidents unfolded during the same cruise, leaving families grieving and authorities searching for answers.

Officials say a 67-year-old woman from Tasmania died after being found unresponsive in the water near Tangalooma Wrecks on April 17. According to the Queensland Police Service, she was discovered in the water near the popular snorkeling site off Moreton Island.

Emergency crews attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the investigation into what happened is still ongoing.

The woman was a passenger aboard the Carnival Splendor, operated by Carnival Cruise Line. The company confirmed her death and said its care team is supporting her family during this difficult time.

Reports say the woman was not part of an official shore excursion when the incident happened.

But that wasn’t the only tragedy on the same voyage.

Later that night, a man in his 70s was reported missing after allegedly going overboard while the ship was sailing back toward Sydney. According to officials, the man appears to have climbed over a safety railing before entering the water.

Family members alerted the crew when they realized he was missing, and a review of onboard surveillance footage confirmed what had happened.

A massive search effort quickly launched, with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority coordinating an extensive air and sea operation. Rescue helicopters, jets, and multiple vessels scoured the waters for days, assisted by local police.

Despite the large-scale effort, authorities announced that the search has now been suspended after three days, though officials say it could resume if new information comes in.

The cruise had departed Sydney on April 15 for what was supposed to be a short, four-day round trip—but it ended in heartbreak for multiple families.
