The music world is mourning the loss of a longtime underground favorite whose sound helped shape alternative rock for decades.

Gregg Foreman, a DJ and multi-instrumentalist best known as the former frontman of The Delta 72, has died at the age of 53. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, he passed away on April 21. His official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Foreman had remained active in music right up until his passing. He had just wrapped a run of shows with Cat Power, including a recent performance at Webster Hall in March. He had also shared on social media that his latest band was in the process of mixing and recording their first EP.

Tributes quickly poured in from friends, fans, and collaborators who remembered not just his talent, but his personality.

Actress Juliette Lewis thanked him for his “gifts” and described him as someone full of humor and kindness. Meanwhile, Wesley Eisold of Cold Cave reflected on knowing Foreman since 2000, calling him “one of one” and praising both his passion for music and the depth of his spirit.

Foreman’s journey into music started early. In a past interview, he credited the iconic film Purple Rain as the spark that made him pick up a guitar. His influences came from both sides of his family—his mother, who had worked as a Motown intern, introduced him to soul, while his father’s taste leaned more toward country rock.

Over the years, he built an impressive résumé, collaborating with artists like The Gossip, Beth Ditto, Lucinda Williams, Jesse Malin, and Linda Perry.

With The Delta 72, Foreman released three studio albums between 1994 and 2001, cementing his place in the alternative scene.

In one of his final social media posts on New Year’s Day, Foreman shared a deeply personal message about growth, healing, and helping others.

“My main daily course of action is to help myself heal, find self love and help others not feel alone,” he wrote, giving fans a glimpse into the mindset he carried with him.
