A luxury cruise has turned into a floating nightmare after a deadly virus outbreak left passengers stranded at sea with no place to dock.

The ship, the MV Hondius, is carrying nearly 150 people from 23 countries — including 17 Americans — and was nearing the end of a 35-day polar journey from Argentina to Antarctica when things took a terrifying turn.

At least three people have died, and several others have fallen ill after an outbreak of hantavirus spread on board. The situation became even more serious when authorities in Cape Verde refused to allow the ship to dock, leaving passengers stuck in isolation as fear and uncertainty grow.

One of the passengers, travel blogger Jake Rosmarin, has been sharing chilling updates from inside the ship. Speaking from quarantine, he described the emotional toll of being trapped at sea during a health crisis.

“We’re not just headlines — we’re people with families,” he said in a tearful message. “There’s a lot of uncertainty, and that’s the hardest part.”

Medical teams are now working to evacuate at least two passengers showing symptoms, while everyone else remains under strict quarantine protocols, including isolation and constant health monitoring.

The ship’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, is scrambling to find a safe port where passengers can disembark, with possible options including islands like Las Palmas and Tenerife.

The virus at the center of the crisis, hantavirus, is rare but potentially deadly. It’s typically spread through contact with airborne particles from rodent droppings or urine and does not easily pass between people.

Health officials assisting with the situation say the exact source of the outbreak is still unclear. It could have come from rodents onboard — or from exposure during earlier stops in South America.

There’s no specific cure for hantavirus, and treatment focuses on supportive care, especially for patients who develop severe respiratory symptoms.

Despite the severity of the situation onboard, the World Health Organization says the risk to the general public remains low and there’s no need for travel restrictions. Still, Cape Verde officials are standing firm on their decision to block the ship as a precaution.

The outbreak has also drawn attention because of its rare but deadly nature. Hantavirus made headlines in 2025 after it claimed the life of Betsy Arakawa, the wife of actor Gene Hackman.

Two of the victims onboard were a married couple from the Netherlands, while a third victim was a German national. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to confirm all details surrounding the deaths.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government says it is monitoring the situation closely and is ready to assist American citizens onboard if needed.
