A terrifying situation unfolded at a Chicago-area middle school after six students were rushed to the hospital when they allegedly consumed THC-infused gummies during the school day.

The alarming incident happened Wednesday, May 6, at Round Lake Middle School in suburban Illinois, sending parents and school officials scrambling for answers.

According to reports from local authorities and school district officials, the students became sick enough that they required medical treatment and were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation.

THC is the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana, and edible gummies containing the substance have become increasingly popular — and controversial — due to concerns about children accidentally consuming products that often resemble regular candy.

Officials said all six students were reported to be in stable condition following the incident.

The school district confirmed it is now working closely with the Round Lake Heights Police Department, which has launched an investigation into how the gummies made their way onto campus and who may have provided them to the students.

At this time, authorities have not publicly released the ages of the students involved or said whether any criminal charges could be filed.

Further details surrounding the incident have not yet been made public, but the frightening situation has once again raised concerns among parents and educators about THC edibles ending up in schools.

Many cannabis-infused gummies are packaged in bright colors and sweet flavors that can easily be mistaken for ordinary snacks or candy, especially by younger children.

School officials have not said whether the gummies were brought from home, shared between students, or obtained another way.

The investigation remains ongoing.
