A Delta Air Lines flight was struck by a firework while descending toward Chicago’s Midway International Airport on Saturday night, creating a terrifying moment for dozens of passengers and crew members on board.

The incident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, as Delta Flight 1076 approached the airport after traveling from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot reported that a fireworks mortar hit the aircraft during its descent shortly before landing.

Air traffic control audio indicated that the flight crew heard and felt a loud bang. The pilots reportedly said they hoped the noise had been caused by a mortar exploding beneath the plane.

The audio also indicated that Chicago police were notified about the incident.

Despite the frightening impact, the Airbus A319 landed safely and was able to taxi to the gate without further problems, Delta said.

Chicago police later confirmed that the firework caused minor damage to the plane’s paint.

The aircraft remained under evaluation on Sunday as Delta inspected it to determine whether the collision caused any additional damage.

There were 52 passengers and six crew members aboard the flight at the time. No injuries were reported.

Chicago police referred further questions about the investigation to the FBI.

Authorities have not released information about where the firework was launched or whether anyone has been identified as being responsible.
