In a shocking development that has raised concerns about the escalating conflict in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly moved nuclear weapons into Belarus.

The move, announced by both Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, has sparked fears that the situation is inching closer to a potential World War 3. With Belarus sharing borders with Ukraine to the south and three NATO countries to the west, the placement of nuclear weapons in Belarus puts several European capitals at risk should Putin decide to launch an attack against Ukraine-aligned allies.

Lukashenko confirmed the relocation of nuclear munitions during the Eurasian Economic Forum in Moscow, stating that storage facilities had been prepared in Belarus. This marks the first time since 1991 that Russia has positioned nuclear weapons on foreign soil, with Kremlin military chiefs reportedly maintaining control over the arsenal in Belarus. The weapons will be positioned along the 674-mile border that Belarus shares with Ukraine.

The U.S. State Department has condemned the agreement between Putin and Lukashenko to place nuclear weapons in Belarus, citing it as another example of Russia’s irresponsible behavior since its invasion of Ukraine over a year ago. However, the State Department clarified that there is currently no reason to adjust the United States’ strategic nuclear posture or any indications that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon.

Putin’s decision to move nukes into Belarus follows his earlier placement of ten nuclear aircraft carriers in the country, which shares a significant border with Ukraine. In March, Putin stated that he had reached an agreement with Lukashenko to position tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus without violating the non-proliferation regime.

While Lukashenko has allowed the placement of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus, he has stopped short of committing Belarusian troops to the frontlines of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The move to position nuclear weapons in Belarus has heightened tensions and raised concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region. The international community will be closely monitoring the situation and urging diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and prevent any catastrophic consequences.
