Trapped and Forgotten: Indiana Woman Survives Six Days in Crushed Car, Fighting Rotting Flesh and Hopelessness

Brieonna Cassell thought she might never see daylight again. Trapped in her crushed vehicle for a harrowing six days, the Indiana native survived by sheer determination, resourcefulness, and a desperate will to live.

On a seemingly ordinary drive on March 5, Brieonna Cassell fell asleep at the wheel, causing her car to veer off the road and plunge into a ditch, completely hidden from view. The impact was devastating.

“My car crunched like an accordion,” Cassell vividly recalled to CBS affiliate WBBM, describing the terrifying moment when she realized she couldn’t escape. Her legs pinned beneath wreckage, Cassell was helpless and completely unseen by passing traffic.

After waking up from the initial shock, Cassell found herself forced into a brutal fight for survival. “I was like, ‘Well, go to sleep—hopefully, somebody finds you,’” she said. But as hours turned into days, Cassell knew she had to act if she was going to survive.

With no food and severely limited mobility, Cassell ingeniously used her clothes to soak up ditch water to keep herself hydrated. She battled freezing nights by wrapping herself in a mattress topper from her car, fighting off the bitter cold and the growing despair.

Six agonizing days passed before two workers from a local drainage company stumbled upon Cassell’s wrecked car on March 11. Johnny Martinez, operating machinery nearby, spotted the barely visible vehicle and quickly alerted his supervisor, Jeremy Vanderwall, who doubles as the local fire chief.

“I see the tire come up and stop,” Cassell recounted emotionally. “Then I was just so relieved.”

The rescuers discovered Cassell alive but in dire condition. Her injuries were so severe that she could smell her own flesh beginning to rot.

“When they pulled me out of that car, my flesh had been rotting for two days,” she bravely admitted. “I didn’t think my legs were coming out of the car with me.”

Cassell was immediately airlifted to a hospital in Chicago, where doctors battled to save her life and limbs. After enduring over a dozen surgeries and months of intensive care, Cassell finally returned home on June 7.

Reflecting on her incredible ordeal and remarkable recovery, Cassell credits divine intervention for her survival.

“I just feel like He has a purpose that I’m here,” Cassell told WGN-TV. “I don’t have any other explanation for it.”

Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, a testament to courage under unimaginable conditions.
